John Lewis Oxford Street Phase 3

Key Project Deliverables

Acorn Waste Management were asked to deliver on the following requirements:

  • Out of Normal Hours Waste Disposal, because of the location of the project the vast majority of deliveries and collections would be outside of normal working hours. Delivery times were critical, reliability essential.
  • To achieve BREEAM overall Standard Outstanding required recycling levels of 95% plus.
  • Detailed and accurate waste reports were to be provided.
  • Provide site with daily best practice guidance for the segregation and removal of waste to ensure full optimisation of cost savings.

Project Objectives

This project was to fully refit the ground floor of John Lewis’s Oxford Street London flagship store.

Due to the store opening times all work had to be carried out outside of normal store opening times and hence no waste removal could be carried out during standard working hours (7:30am – 6:00pm).

Timescales for project completion were tight, around 8 months, and due to the nature of the refit the waste streams produced varied greatly, from concrete blocks to general mixed waste, plasterboard and timber.

Acorn Waste Management were tasked to provide the best possible solution for the fast paced nature of the project. As well as only servicing the site out of normal hours Acorn Waste Management would also have to show full transparency for the disposal of the waste providing detailed reports by waste stream and provide end destination reports for ALL waste.

The ultimate goal was to achieve a 100% recycling rate.

Proposed Solutions

By careful planning and tight management of service provider partners, Acorn Waste Management were able to provide an out of hours service which would attend site at set times during the night, in this case 9:00pm and collect the following morning at 5:30am, well before opening times, eliminating any disruption to the customer and eradicating any site waste disposal issues.

With constant monitoring by Acorn Waste these times were adhered to on every site visit minimising delays and increasing site productivity.

Site Managers and Acorn Waste Management were constantly in contact to ensure the best possible solution was provided at each stage of the project. An example of this would be by delivering segregated waste skips to site instead of a frequently used 40yd roll on roll off recycling rates were fully optimised.

The site was also given a dedicated Acorn customer service operator so continuity of contact was optimised and any issues were handled with the utmost efficiency.

Project Summary

This project is on-going.

Due to Acorn Waste Management’s exceptional service and compliance throughout the project it has secured future work from both the main Contractor and their client.

By using Acorn Waste on this project not only was a 100% recycle rate achieved but an overall saving of 7% was saved against the original waste element of the tender due to our tight control at site level and using best practice on site waste disposal.
