Case Study – Site Clearance – Domestic Property

BACKGROUND

Acorn Waste Management were asked to assist with the site clearance of various waste streams from a domestic property.

The works offered challenges in terms of the variety and identification of all wastes in overgrown land, access onto site, and the appropriate deployment of waste containers/services to segregate & transfer waste off site.

CHALLENGE

  • Bulky waste items: Broken down caravan, which was taking up a large area of the garden. Whilst the materials are suitable for recycling, we would need to ensure the material is cut into suitably size sections for handling.
  • Heavy waste items: Around 2-3 tons of bricks were required to be removed.
  • Variety of waste: Waste volume had been built up over a matter of years. containing everything from mattresses, chairs, swimming pools, soil, wood, and general mixed waste.
  • Unknown waste streams: The chance for waste streams that require special handling.
  • Logistics: Operatives and suitable waste containers would be required to segregate and load waste into suitable waste containers/vehicles.
  • Site conditions: The garden was overgrown, resulting in items being hidden within the grass. Extra precautions would need to be taken when sorting through the waste

   

 

 

SOLUTION

The following plan of services was agreed and completed, following a successful initial site visit to fully assess the site clearance needs, and overall challenges

 

1.Site Visit (to determine)

  • Site conditions such as surface type, the depth of the waste.
  • Suitability for provision of suitably sized waste containers/collection service.
  • Equipment required for the segregation and safe sorting of waste.
  • Number of operatives required and suitable PPE.
  • The condition for completed works sign off.

2.Waste assessment

  • Grass areas were cut back to allow for all waste to be assessed to eliminate risk of waste streams that required special handling

3.Waste segregation

  • Waste was carefully segregated to achieve appropriate and best value off site recycling.

4.Waste removal

  • Once segregation was achieved, materials were suitable loaded into appropriate waste containers/collection vehicles. Challenges we had to overcome were the placement of waste containers/services. Through close dialogue with all stakeholders, agreements were satisfactory made.

5.Project management

  • The project had associated timescales for completion & sign-off. To ensure the work was completed on time, we worked closely with our transport & onsite site clearance team, to achieve responsive service delivery against daily working plans.

 

RESULTS

  • All waste successfully segregated and transferred off site using best practice service and end recycling facilities.
  • Overgrown areas cut back, and ground appropriately levelled.
  • Works completed to project timeframe.
  • No wastes associated with risks were identified during the clearance.
  • All Waste transfer notes and associated weight tickets available for our client, via our customer online portal called “Vision”.
