Major Hazardous Waste Disposal Project Case Study

Key Project Deliverables

Acorn Waste Management were asked to deliver on the following requirements:

  • Restricted Access – Rural location.
  • Health & Safety Issues – Farm Animals & Wildlife.
  • High Levels of Lead contaminated soils.
  • 20-mile Area of Operation
  • 3 Day response time on commencement of project.
  • 13 Week Project with contracted deadlines.

Project Objectives

The project was complicated by high levels of lead contamination in the soils. This was caused during dismantling equipment on a high-profile utility site when lead-based paint leaked into the soil causing contamination.

The project was further complicated by the hilly, rural setting so special care had to be taken to protect the natural wildlife.

Communication was the key to a successful and timely completion of this project; hence tight management of suppliers was essential.

A rapid, environmentally compliant but cost-effective solution was the ultimate objective of this project. Acorn Waste Management was tasked to provide the best possible solution for potentially a major environmental incident.

Proposed Solutions

  • Carefully selected Specialist Team assembled with capabilities to meet objectives.
  • High levels of Communication and Organisation to ensure safety of all the wildlife, movement organised, separating fences built.
  • Soil removal by Tipper Lorry, taken to soil cleaning facility and returned to site.
  • Teams organised to respond quickly to job commencement.
  • WEEE waste and COSHH items collected by Acorn Waste Rapid Response Hazardous Waste Service.
