Time critical out of hours services – highways of the UK

Key Project Deliverables

Our client undertakes national maintenance works on the busy motorways of the UK. Due to the nature of the works which must be carried out in line with time critical traffic management schedules, skips are not an option.

Salient points:

  • The work will need to be carried out at night to ensure minimum disruption on the highway.
  • The waste will need to be removed promptly to avoid delays in roads re-opening.
  • There is no loading equipment available to load a waste receptacle.
  • Due to the nature of the work - requirements may alter at very short notice at any time of the day or night.

Project Objectives

Due to the complex nature of the works, projects can be re-scheduled, postponed or deemed to be emergency works that require a rapid response. These requirements are site specific, and affected by weather conditions.

The nature of the waste can also alter depending on the maintenance being undertaken but it is vital that all waste must leave site in the allocated time.

Due to traffic management, all services must be carried out on a time critical basis.

Proposed Solutions

Acorn Waste Management proposed using grab lorries booked throughout the night and in line with traffic management schedules, this was met with client approval so Acorn Waste Management put together a network of fully briefed, highways compliant local depots that fully understood the nature of the works and could respond rapidly to any emergency requirements as soon as they were contacted by Acorn Waste Management.

Acorn Waste Management also understood the importance of full operational support at any time of the day or night and therefore provided a dedicated out of hours contact system meaning they were on hand whenever and wherever they were required.

Micromanagement of these vital highways works has resulted in over 2 years of seamless grab lorry services on highways throughout the UK. Our expert knowledge of the works has resulted in a successful and rewarding partnership that has shown progression and growth.
